Lufthansa Makes $250M SAF Purchase

December 30, 2021 — German airline Lufthansa has announced a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) purchase of $250 million over the next 3 years. As business travel begins to increase, Lufthansa has seen a growing demand for SAF usage from its corporate clients. This is the most significant SAF investment from the Lufthansa group and makes them Europe’s largest SAF customer. The group has also signed a letter of intent with the Heide Refinery for the future supply of their Power-to-Liquid technology fuels at Hamburg Airport. The European Union is introducing a climate plan that will require airlines to blend at least 2% SAF into conventional jet fuel by 2025 and it is expected that more companies will be looking for SAF investments in the future.

Lufthansa’s agreement can be found here.
