Germany Set to Increase Aviation Tax

November 19, 2019 – Germany is set to raise its aviation tax on all departing flights starting in April 2020 (connecting flights are exempt). Short-haul flights will see the greatest increase proportionally from $8.31 per passenger to $14.44, while medium-haul and long-haul flights will increase by $10.62 and $19.11, respectively. The revenue from the aviation tax will be used to reduce the tax on train tickets from 19 percent to 7. The German aviation industry opposes the tax increase arguing that it will not contribute toward reaching the country’s emissions reduction goals and will reduce German airlines’ resources to invest in new, clean technologies, fuels, and fleet.
