Airbus/Interjet to Fly Halophyte based Renewable Jet Fuel Blend (1/4/2010)
Aviation Week reports that in early 2010, Mexican low-cost airline Interjet will conduct a flight on an Airbus A320 with one of its engines burning a blend of conventional and bio-derived jet fuel using Salicornia--an oil producing plant from a family of saltwater tolerant plants known as halophytes. This is the first flight of a halophyte based fuel and follows Jatropha, Camelina, and Algae fueled flights by Air New Zealand, Continental and JAL in December 2008 and January 2009. Halophytes are one of a handful of feedstocks viewed as having great near-term potential for production of aviation biofuels without impacting fresh water and food supplies.
